Campbell is a city in Santa Clara County, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area and the heart of Silicon Valley. Its population was 43,959 at the 2020 census, and it is bordered by San Jose, Los Gatos, Saratoga, and Santa Clara. The city's nickname, the Orchard City, points to its origins. Campbell was established in 1846 and prospered through the nineteenth century on the fruit canning industry, when the Santa Clara Valley was covered in orchards. The Ainsley House, built for a local canning pioneer, and the Campbell Historical Museum preserve that heritage, while the Pruneyard — a 27-acre shopping and office center built in the late 1960s on the former Brynteson Ranch orchard — carries the agricultural name into the present. Modern Campbell is best known for its walkable downtown, centered on Campbell Avenue, with independent shops, restaurants, diners, and a farmers market, and for the Pruneyard's mix of retail, dining, and offices. The Los Gatos Creek Trail runs through the city with about three miles of paved trail, and Los Gatos Creek County Park adds open space along the waterway. Public education is provided by two districts: the Campbell Union School District for preschool through eighth grade and the Campbell Union High School District for grades nine through twelve. Transportation centers on VTA light rail, which connects Campbell to downtown San Jose and the Diridon Station regional transit hub, and on Highways 17 and 85 along the city's edges. San José Mineta International Airport lies about 10 miles away. The result is a mature, walkable suburb that keeps its orchard-town roots while sitting squarely within Silicon Valley's economy and transit network.
