Mojave Desert Route 66 Town

Apartments in Daggett, CA

Welcome to Daggett, a small San Bernardino County town on old Route 66 in the Mojave Desert, ten miles east of Barstow and steps from Calico Ghost Town.

Daggett is a small unincorporated town in San Bernardino County, California, set in the Mojave Desert along Interstate 40 and the old alignment of Route 66. It lies about ten miles east of Barstow at an elevation of roughly 2,000 feet, in a broad valley threaded by the intermittent Mojave River. The landscape is classic high desert: creosote flats, distant mountain ranges, wide skies, and a horizon punctuated by the region's growing solar-energy installations. Daggett is among the oldest settlements in the Mojave Desert. It began in the 1860s as Calico Junction and was later renamed for Lieutenant Governor John Daggett. The arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1882 transformed it into a major railroad town and a supply point for the surrounding mining districts, including the silver mines of nearby Calico. As mining boomed and faded, Daggett settled into its role as a desert crossroads and railroad stop. Route 66 passed through Daggett, and the town still carries that legacy. Its old downtown holds several buildings dating back more than a century, including the Stone Hotel, the Desert Market—reportedly the first fireproof building in the Mojave Desert—and Fout's Garage. A Route 66 agricultural inspection station in Daggett appeared in the 1940 film The Grapes of Wrath. Today Daggett is a quiet community of roughly 200 people, more notable for what surrounds it than for its own size. Large photovoltaic solar facilities and battery storage now occupy the desert nearby, part of California's energy build-out, and the town sits along the I-40 corridor that carries traffic between Barstow and the Colorado River. Calico Ghost Town Regional Park, a restored 1880s silver-mining town, lies a short drive away. Students attend Barstow Unified School District, and most services are found in Barstow. For those drawn to the desert, Daggett offers a deep sense of history, open space, and a front-row seat to the modern Mojave's transformation.
