Gateway to the Sierras
Apartments in Clovis, CA
Welcome to Clovis, a Fresno County city east of downtown Fresno known for its Old Town district, annual rodeo, and highly regarded Clovis Unified schools.
Clovis sits on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, immediately adjacent to Fresno in Fresno County. Its origins are tied to the railroad and to timber. In the early twentieth century, the San Joaquin Valley Railroad built through the area, and a lumber mill anchored the young settlement; the town's principal streets were named for the railroad's officers, a detail still visible in the street grid. The mill burned in 1914 and was not rebuilt, and its former grounds became the site of Clark Intermediate School and the Clovis Rodeo Grounds—an early sign of how the community would reorient itself around schools and civic tradition. That rodeo heritage became one of Clovis's defining institutions. The Clovis Rodeo, tracing its roots to the community's earliest years, remains a major annual event and a cultural touchstone, keeping the city's Western identity alive even as it grew into a substantial Central Valley suburb. Old Town Clovis, with its preserved storefronts and independent businesses, functions as the historic heart and gathering place of the city. Clovis is best known today for its schools and its position as a gateway to the Sierra Nevada. Clovis Unified School District, formed in 1959 through the consolidation of several independent districts, has earned a strong regional reputation and draws families to the area. State Route 168, which runs through the city and reaches downtown Fresno in about nine miles, connects Clovis to the broader highway network and onward toward the mountains. The city markets itself as the "Gateway to the Sierras," and Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia national parks all lie within roughly ninety minutes. For newcomers, Clovis offers new housing, well-regarded schools, and a community-centered small-town feel within a larger metro region.
